2016 looking to be bigger and better than 2015
The Wairarapa Bush Rugby Union is pleased to announce another big year for the rugby fraternity with a wealth of opportunities to see top flight rugby played at Trust House Memorial Park and around the club grounds.
In March 2016 the Webb Ellis Cup will be coming to the Wairarapa for a viewing and the WBRU is working with NZRU to establish which venues will get to host the Cup.
Playing numbers in the union continue to increase with an increase of nearly 200 players since 2013 taking the total number registered to 2,457.
A record number of 217 coaches were registered in 2015.
The on and off field performance by the union players, spectators and officials was pleasing with the union recording the lowest number of red and yellow cards.
The WBRU Referees Association had plenty of success with Alistair Payne and Rebecca Mahoney reaching national honours.
The club competition will have the added bonus of Puketoi returning to the fold in the senior reserve competition along with Masterton Red Star and Turhirangi aiming for promotion relegation while Greytown, Martinborough, Marist, East Coast, Pioneer, Carterton, Gladstone and Eketahuna will contest the Tui Cup.
The junior and college rugby competitions will look to host some weight for age games and all colleges have once again committed back into the very successful Wednesday night college rugby competition.
The Colt’s competition will start again in 2016 with players being put forward to the NZ Heartland Under 19 XV.
The WBRU will continue its long relationship with Wairarapa Connecting Communities with the free holiday programs and working with the Robert Algie Trust.
The popular one day pre-season club competition will be played prior to the senior competition starting and the Trust House Wairarapa Bush team will have probably its best pre-season line up for quite a few years with games against teams from Hawkes Bay, Wellington, Poverty Bay, Wanganui and the Hurricanes Development team.
