Rams’ Bon is da bomb!
Masterton Red Star’s Bon Wilson turned on the fireworks with a dazzling display in Senior Reserve rugby at Trust House Memorial Park this afternoon.
The Rams’ pivot was superb in his all-round play with jinking runs and a near textbook kicking performance.
The unbeaten Rams had too much power and pace for Carterton winning 45-10 to set up a top of the table clash with Martinborough next Saturday. The southerners, who beat Greytown 34-10 earlier in the afternoon, currently edge out the Rams by a bonus point.
It was far from the perfect performance by the home team who trailed 10-3 at the first quarter mark following a try to Carterton loosie Josh Rowlands. But they eventually settled into their rhythm running in six tries and thrilling their vocal supporters who had turned up to celebrate the club’s Old Timer’s Day.
With a big advantage at set pieces, when the Rams weren’t smashing Carterton in the scrum they were flooring their opposites with some ferocious tackling. Out-muscling the visitors the Rams also out-paced them and always looked for a quick play of the ball.
It was precisely from this that they scored their first try when No.8 Fono Setu took a quick tap deep in his own half charging up field. The ball went through several pairs of hands before flanker Lene Malatai dotted down.
A barnstorming run by prop Joe Heihei sparked the second try, finished off by fellow front-rower Malu Lole.
Up 17-10 at the break the Rams stalled a little in the third quarter before unleashing some thrilling at
tacking rugby running in four more tries. Bon Wilson scored the penultimate five-pointer with a brilliant jinking run. The initial break was lead by last year’s Scots College 1st XV captain Jack Loader who made good yardage up the middle.
Wilson’s kicking was simply superb, landing all seven of his shots at goal, including three sideline conversions.
Half-back Hemiona Walker, Heihei, Setu and Jake Gibbs also had strong games.
Meanwhile, in the premier competition, Martinborough upset round one winners Greytown 14-13 and Gladstone scored five tries in their 37-10 routing of East Coast. Both Marist and Carterton were away winners in their matches with the former downing Eketahuna 18-16, and the latter narrowly clipping Pioneer 15-12.
