It’s with pleasure that we welcome the Poverty Bay rugby players, officials, and of course their supporters. Poverty Bay formed in 1890 has produced many great players.

Those of note, Tiny White, Ian Kirkpatrick, and more recently Hosea and Rico Gear. I’m sure that our visitors will enjoy the experience of playing on the best ground in Heartland Rugby.

Farriers Wairarapa Bush has much to gain from this match, as do our visitors a chance for both teams to gauge their progress to date.

I am sure that the Wairarapa Supporters will be in fine voice and that all will be made welcome at the Gravel Pit. Hospitality is a hallmark of our union.

I hope all enjoy the game and come away with fond memories of today’s event.

Firstly, a very warm Wairarapa welcome to Poverty Bay for our annual pre-season match. The traditional fixture sees the two Heartland Teams competing for the Jeremy David Cup. David was a promising young player with strong connections to both unions. He was a member of the Hurricanes Development Squad when a tragic accident ended his life.

On behalf of your very proud union I would like to acknowledge all of our committees, coaches, team management groups, players and supporters for a truly out-standing season of local club rugby. The year will be recalled as one where the level of competition and passion was superlative.

The continuing growth of the local Senior Reserve competition is impressive- both in terms of size and quality. The return of Puketoi and Featherston, and the development of the Pioneer Old Boys team deserve particular commendation.

The club finals day in 2016 was a huge success drawing a great walk up crowd (especially given the conditions!) culminating in a compelling final broadcast live and globally. Congratulations to Greytown.

So now we progress to the representative phase of the year. All the very best to Josh, his management team, and the Farriers Wairarapa Bush playing squad. We know you will make us proud again. I encourage all supporters to get along to Trust House Memorial Park for the first competition game of the year against King Country on 27 August at 2.30pm.
