The Whistle Blower
Most rugby fans love to talk about most other sports and unfortunately they are also instant expertise on the rules of all those sports as soon as a Referee, Umpire or Rules Official has been shown to be human and to have erred during their officiating.

We have witnessed it this week with the controversy over the officiating by Peter O’Leary at the Football World Cup. Essentially it goes like this. His Touch Judge decided that the Bosnian striker was offside; a call that the Referee went with. Was it right or wrong? That doesn’t even come into the equation for the thousand of ardent but patriotically biased Bosnian Football supporters. It must have been a wrong decision because it went against our team.

And all over New Zealand and I suspect the rest of the world, referees of all ilks will be frustrated at the unfairness of the fan’s reactions. We are a fair-minded bunch in New Zealand and we understand that sometimes refs get it wrong. That’s the nature of sport. And I do detect that most New Zealanders have a great deal of sympathy for the predicament that Mr O’Leary has found himself in. But we know that the heat will die down and in no time at all it will be forgotten.

But you bet in Bosnia it will be different. The memories and vitriolic ravings will last forever. So, just like the English when Mr Kelleher sent off Colin Meads in 1967 or Wayne Barnes made a couple of errors in “that” World Cup match, I don’t know if I would like to be a New Zealander hitchhiking through Bosnia Herzegovina just at the moment.
It could be a very long walk with some very cold nights.

The Whistle Blower.
