Review of Heartland Season 2016 and Farriers Wairarapa Bush Rugby Union Heartland Coach role 2017 and 2018.
The Wairarapa Bush Rugby Union Board has now completed its review of the 2016 Heartland Team season and head coach- Josh Syms.
The Board was very pleased with Sym’s work and performance with the team and local clubs and the overall performance of the Farriers Heartland team over the last two seasons.
Board Chair, Paora Ammunson, says “Josh has worked tirelessly with our clubs and players and has created some excellent new systems and processes for our top teams. He has also builtgood connections through the Wairarapa rugby community. Josh is a truly talented coach, and talent spotter.”
Ammunson says while Syms has made a great contribution to taking the Union to a higher level of achievement in rugby, he will be largely unavailable during the 2017 club season due to his work commitments in Wellington.
Ammunson says “The Board believes the Heartland head coach needs to be ‘hands on’ and available through the Wairarapa Bush club rugby season and in particular on Saturdays to view players regularly, and to continue the direct work with local clubs on Tuesdays and Thursdays.”
“We have discussed this with Josh and have agreed that it may be in both parties’ best interests to look to appoint another person to the head coach role. While we probably would have re-appointed Josh for another year, perhaps this is an opportunity to push on with our long term goal to elevate a home grown leader to the head role.”
Syms says there are some great potential local candidates for the head coach role “I believe the Union is heading in the right direction by looking to grow and develop the local player and coach talent base. And I am proud to have helped with this stage of the strategy.”
Ammunson says Josh and his family have settled in Masterton- “While he may be working in Wellington, we hope that he will still be able to be part of the Wairarapa Bush rugby whanau in other ways.”
“We wish Josh well for the future and the Board will announce the process over the coming week for the head coach appointment for next season.”
