Message from the Wairarapa Bush President, Doug Bracewell
A warm welcome to King Country and a thank you for making the effort to come and play traditional rivals Wairarapa Bush . The game has special significance as it provides us with an opportunity to reflect on the wonderful contribution Sir Brian Lochore and Sir Colin Meads made to NZ rugby not only as players but coaches as well.
As a player I was part of the era when BJ and Pinetree were rival coaches. The respect for each other was obvious but this did not prevent the games being highly competitive.
Despite the Heartland competition not going ahead it is great to see both provinces taking the opportunity to provide local players with representative rugby. With no restrictions on crowds we look forward to a wonderful spectacle.
Message from the Wairarapa Bush Chairman, Jason Carruthers
On behalf of the WBRU we would like to welcome you to the 2020 Hodder-Steffert and Tui Cup finals.
Wherever you are, in front of your TV, laptop, phone or at a public venue, thank you and we hope you enjoy our coverage of rugby under Level 2.
We would like to acknowledge the Life Members from the respective clubs and the WBRU Life Members.
It is always a pleasure to welcome our sponsors and we cannot thank you enough for your continued support during 2020 in what has been, an incredibly unique year for us all.
Normally at this time of year we would be hosting around 3,000-4,000 people on Grand Finals day but today we are in “bubbles of 100” with several new protocols and policies.
What an exciting season 2020 has been. The delayed start due to COVID ended up being a blessing in disguise. The shorted competition became so exciting with close games and continuous upsets, it was not until the last weekend we knew who would be in the semi-finals. There was no clear leader in the pack.
We wish the best for all four teams and their respective supporters. I cannot say enough about our Referees who have again provide quality officiating and there are the few new stars rising through the ranks.
The rugby union has achieved several milestones throughout the year with a successful launch of our live streaming of games. The recent Reserves Plate Final a few weeks ago, viewing hit 11,000 and the Saturday morning Childsey and Persico Show is proving to be extremely popular.
The move to on-line media platforms is a clear medium our rugby community sponsors are enjoying. We are pleased with the union’s transition into this space and there will be more to come in 2021 and in-turn, we will be able offer more for our sponsors and fantastic rugby followers.
Congratulations to our Makoura Combined Secondary Schools girls team including students from Solway and St Matthews who is coached by our Women’s Development Officer Sinead Burrell and WBRU College RDO Sam Mitchell, winning the Manawatu Secondary’s Schools competition on Wednesday against Dannevirke High School 17 – 7.
There can be no more satisfaction of a strategy launched 2 years ago, come to fruition.
A big thanks to all the people behind the scenes and a special thanks to Stacey Puddy and the Council of Clubs who has had many challenges during COVID, to bring us the club rugby at all levels and this weekend’s finals. Thank you.
Finally, we would not have a union without the clubs, colleges, and referees and over the weekend starting on Friday Night, we have a chance to celebrate their achievement.
Congratulations Makoura College (Combined Colleges) Secondary School Girls for winning the Manawatu Secondary School Girls 10-a-side Final against Dannevirke High School 17-7
