It is with great pleasure to announce Mark Rutene (left) as the Head Coach of the Farriers Wairarapa Bush Heartland team and his Assistant Coaches, Brent Wilson (Forwards) and Nathan Riwai-Couch (Backs), supported by Shay O’Gorman as Team Manager, for the next two Heartland Seasons.

Mark returns for his second stint as the Wairarapa Bush Heartland Coach (2011-2014) and brings with him enormous experience.

For the last four seasons, Mark has been heavily involved in NZRU rugby, as the current Heartland NZ XV Coach (which included the World Cup warm-up game versus Samoa in 2019 at Eden Park), Assistant and then Head Coach of the Heartland NZ Under 19, Hurricanes Barbarian Under 19 Head Coach, and was Assistant Coach for Horowhenua-Kapiti who went on to win the Lochore Cup in 2018.

This exposure and experience gained at the highest level puts him in good stead to continue the great foundation work by Joe Harwood and Deon van Deventer over the last 4 seasons.

Brent Wilson (right) brings 15 years of experience as a professional rugby player during his time in the England Premiership with Leicester, Newcastle and Nottingham. Brent Wilson is a product of Wairarapa College and returned home in 2018. Brent has been playing for Carterton and turned out in 2019 for Wairarapa Bush as lock. He currently holds his Level 2 and Level 3 coaching certificates.

Nathan Riwai-Couch (below) needs no introduction to the Wairarapa Bush rugby community, with 77 games to his name in the green and red, and was an original player of the winning Meads Cup team in 2006.

Shay O’Gorman (below left) has been reappointed as Team Manager, and Davide Castorina (below right) as Physio.

The combined experience of the three-man coaching setup, supported by the continuity of incumbents Shay and Davide, will continue the positively received strategy of selecting “local player or players of origin” and keeping with our “building within” policies.
