Obituary – Keith Hannam

The Wairarapa Bush Referees Association is today mourning the sudden passing of our Patron and great friend Keith Hannam.

Keith has a huge history with WBRRA dating back into the 1970’s and refereed over 215 Senior A games as well as many more local fixtures.

He refereed in representative rugby between 1979 and 1982. During his long and illustrious career with WB he held every post in our executive and at the time of his passing was our current Patron having held that role for the past 10 years.

Keith was a life member of WBRRA as well as the Wairarapa Bush Union and was an ex past President.

Keith of recent years single handedly refurbished the referees lounge in the grandstand after the rooms were seriously impacted by the grandstand earthquake strengthening. The rooms today are modern, warm and a wonderful tribute to Keith’s energy and tenacity.

He will be remembered as a referee of strong character who refereed because he loved the game and more especially loved the company of like minded people.

Following his retirement he spent many years coaching young referees and I can well remember many tips and assessments that he imparted on us all.

His many road trips with the late Baden Whale both during their active years and more lately covering the length and breadth of our Union result in some memorable yarns.

Our Association would like to pass on our deepest sympathy to Jean and his son Steven who like his father had a huge role in rugby refereeing.

All our referees will be honouring Keith this weekend with black armbands and the Union has graciously allowed us to mark his passing with a moments silence prior to each game.

Chairman WBRRA.
