The Whistle Blower
There’s no such thing as a Rugby Season anymore. Look at the work load for Alistair Payne.

He started refereeing club rugby warm-up matches last March. After our Club Season his Heartland Championship commitments took him right through to late October. And then he was appointed to referee at the Central Districts 7’s and last weekend he was a match Official at the Cake Tin for the World Series 7

And Rebecca Mahoney, having refereed college fixtures played rugby for Manawatu up to Mid-October and then refereed at three 7’s tournaments before she went to Rotorua for the national 7’s Tournament in mid-January. There she was so impressive she has been drafted into the National Women’s 1st Class Panel. This means she will be refereeing women’s 1st class rugby at the end of next season.

In refereeing circles at least, Rugby is a year-round sport.

And this year the Referee Panel in the Wairarapa is brim full of talented referees who will be pushing hard to knock Chris Jefferies, Alistair Payne and Scott Andrew off their top three perches in our Refereeing ranks. Ryan Hardman, Mike Wakefield, Rebecca Mahoney and Paul Thomson are just so full of promise that poor performance early in the season by last year’s Premier Panel may see some of our incumbents struggling for Top of the Table appointments.

And isn’t that what you want. The best referees getting pushed to improve. The new Refs bringing fresh ideas and modern influences.
Better refereeing leads to better rugby which leads to better individual player performance.

That’s what I will be looking for. I hope you will be as well.

The Whistle Blower.
